What is HypnoBirthing?

HypnoBirthing® is based on the work of Dr Grantly Dick-Read, an English physician. In his book ‘Childbirth without fear’, originally published in 1933, he states that ‘there is no physiological function that gives rise to pain in the normal course of health. In no other animal species is the process of birth apparently associated with any suffering, pain or agony, except where pathology exists or in an unnatural state such as captivity’.

Dr Dick-Read hypothesised that when women are terrified of giving birth, the ‘fight or flight’ response kicks in. This response diverts blood flow away from the organs that are non-essential to fighting and fleeing, including the uterus. As a result of this the uterus is unable to perform its function efficently or without pain. This belief led to Dr Dick-Read’s theory that fear and tension result in labour pains.

The HypnoBirthing® programme explores this fear-tension-pain cycle and provides you with the tools to release any fears that you may have about giving birth. The programme focuses on how to achieve a state of deep relaxation (self-hypnosis) using specific breathing techniques and ‘light touch’ massage to facilitate the birthing process.

You will also learn:

• How self hypnosis can be helpful during pregnancy.

• How to appreciate the importance of good nutrition.

• How to develop positive thinking techniques.

• How to create a calm, relaxing environment using specific music, and positive thinking techniques.

• How to reduce the likelihood of needing analgesia during labour.

• How to reduce the likelihood of needing an episiotomy or tearing.

• How to cope if labour slows and other special circumstances.

• How to reduce the likelihood of suffering from postnatal depression.

Your HypnoBirthing® Practitioner

My name is Sharon Rapsey. I qualified as a midwife in 2004 and have since practised in the UK and in Spain,

• Most of my experience has been on labour wards.

Over a year ago I was present at a birth where the mother had chosen to follow the HypnoBirthing® programme. I watched with amazement as she gave birth to her 9lb 6oz baby with ease, in a calm and peaceful manner, without the need for any analgesia. This birth was unlike any other I had seen. The experience inspired me to explore the benefits of self-hypnosis and its use for childbirth. I have since qualified as a HypnoBirthing® practitioner and am fully affiliated with the HypnoBirthing® Institute.
